Now, iPhone16 And with the release of the 16 Pro, Apple’s generative AI efforts under the not-too-subtle name Apple Intelligence are almost officially a reality. Currently, the iPhone 16 series ships without Apple Intelligence, but a rumor from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman points out that Apple will release some Apple Intelligence features on October 28th.
Apple Intelligence will not be limited to the iPhone, but will be added across multiple Apple operating systems. Expectations for Apple’s AI have been rising ever since Apple Intelligence stole the show at June’s WWDC keynote and took a step forward at its It’s Glowtime event in early September, which introduced the iPhone 16 lineup.

In his Glowtime keynote, Apple’s head of software engineering, Craig Federighi, said Apple Intelligence is “at the heart of the iPhone 16 experience.”

The company released Apple Intelligence for public testing days before the iPhone 16 hit stores, including Apple’s promised AI-powered writing tools, Siri enhancements, and photo library. Part of the request was included. However, the feature won’t be fully released for a subset of iPhones, iPads, and Macs with the necessary chipsets until later this fall, but it will debut as an opt-in beta feature after that.

So Apple Intelligence is actually a beta within a beta, part of the public beta for iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and MacOS Sequoia 15.1.

Apple won’t introduce all of its promised AI-driven upgrades at once. The public beta of Apple Intelligence includes an AI-recommended writing tool that pops up in documents and emails, a photo tool that includes a cleanup that removes unnecessary parts of images, and a photo tool that is designed to sound more natural and pleasant. Contains numerous changes to Siri, including new voices. Contextual conversations, a new glowing border around the display when Siri is running, and a double-tap gesture at the bottom of the screen to type into Siri.

You can also request instant movie memories in photos and AI summaries in messages, emails, notifications, and notes. But it doesn’t yet have the ChatGPT plugin, Apple’s GenMoji and Image Playground features, or other Siri features.

The public beta includes an option in the Settings app to opt in to Apple Intelligence features for testing, a process that Apple says can take several hours to be approved. It remains to be seen whether a similar opt-in process will occur for Apple’s upcoming public release of Apple Intelligence beta later this year.

Some of Apple’s AI features sound really useful, but they’re rolling out exclusively to select iPhones, iPads, and Macs (iPhone 15 Pro models and later, and Macs and iPads with M-series chips) later this year. Yes means no AI is used. everyone. Hopefully, you’ll start to understand what these features can actually do.

Apple Intelligence is touted as “AI for the rest of us.” The idea is that Apple Intelligence is built into your iPhone, iPad, and Mac to help you write, get things done, and express yourself. It leverages your personal context across Apple devices to make recommendations and generate more user-specific results. Apple touts its AI capabilities as setting a whole new standard for privacy in AI.

In an article about Apple Intelligence, CNET’s Lisa Eadicicco writes that understanding personal context when providing answers and performing tasks is a big part of Apple’s approach to Apple Intelligence. It says that there is.

“Apple appears to be using this tactic as a way to differentiate its AI efforts from those previously announced by competitors,” Eadicco wrote. “As an example, the company explained how Apple Intelligence can understand multiple factors such as traffic conditions, schedules, and contacts to help you understand whether you can arrive at an event on time. .”

Apple Intelligence is currently available in beta on iPhone 16 series, iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max with Siri and device language set to US English, and iPad or Mac with M1 chip or later.

This fall, Apple Intelligence will be generally available as part of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and MacOS Sequoia.

Here is the current list of Apple devices that can run Apple Intelligence:

  • iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, 16 Pro Max
  • iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max
  • iPad Air with M1 or M2 chip
  • iPad Pro with M1, M2, or M4 chip
  • MacBook Air with M1, M2, or M3 chip
  • MacBook Pro with M1, M2, or M3 chip
  • Mac Mini with M1 or M2 chip
  • Mac Studio with M1 or M2 chip
  • iMac with M1 or M3 chip
  • Mac Pro with M2 chip

When will Apple Intelligence be available?

The first set of features leveraging Apple Intelligence capabilities will be available in beta in October as part of iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and MacOS Sequoia 15.1. Garman hypothesizes that Apple Intelligence will be retired on October 28th. Additional features will be available “in the coming months,” Apple said.

You can now use Apple Intelligence with Siri and your device language set to US English on a compatible iPhone, iPad, or Mac running the public beta of iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, or MacOS Sequoia 15.1.

Where is Apple Intelligence available?

It will also be available in the US at launch. Specifically, Apple says Apple Intelligence works with compatible iPhone, iPad, or Mac models with Siri and device language set to US English. Support for additional languages is expected to launch in 2025.

Does Apple Intelligence use ChatGPT?

No, Apple Intelligence runs on your device (iPhone, iPad, or Mac) and on servers powered by Apple Silicon in the cloud, in what Apple calls private cloud computing. Whether Apple Intelligence is processed on your device or in the cloud depends on the prompt or question. Apple Intelligence is not ChatGPT, nor does it run on top of OpenAI’s popular services.

However, Apple Intelligence supports complementary third-party AI services, the first being ChatGPT announced. ChatGPT access is integrated with Siri and writing tools in iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and MacOS Sequoia, giving Apple device owners access without having to navigate between tools.

Apple Intelligence features fall into one of three categories: Writing, Images, and Siri. Writing tools are available everywhere. Apple Intelligence lets you proofread text, adjust tone and presentation to rewrite different versions, and summarize selected text with just a tap.

Image tools will now be able to create original images based on prompts in the new Image Playground app. Powered by Apple Intelligence, Image Wand turns your rough sketches into relevant images that complement your notes. You can also generate custom and unique Genmojis directly from your keyboard using Apple Intelligence. Apple says you’ll also have the option to select someone from your photo library and create a Genmoji that resembles that person.

The Photos app allows you to create custom memory movies based on the description you enter.

Apple Intelligence is a major overhaul of Siri. Siri has a new design, provides richer language understanding, and allows you to type into Siri instead of using voice input. Siri’s voices and responses sound more natural and conversational. Apple Intelligence gives Siri awareness of your personal context, the ability to take actions within and across apps, and product knowledge about your device’s features and settings. Apple says Siri will be able to support users like never before.

How much does Apple Intelligence cost?

Apple does not charge a fee for Apple Intelligence, nor has it announced any plans to do so.
