Later this month, subscribers to Amazon’s Prime Video service will be able to sign up for Apple TV+ as a $9.99 monthly add-on to their Prime subscription. The announcement came like a bolt out of the blue on Thursday evening. That means: ring of power, boyand Reacher Soon, some of the audience will also be immersed in ted lasso and slow horse. It’s certainly an interesting combination, but why was this move necessary and what does it actually mean?
First and foremost, this joint announcement is light on details. In other words, Really light. There’s no timing beyond “later this month,” and no details on how to actually subscribe (I’m guessing you can subscribe anywhere directly from the app, but I don’t know).
What’s more interesting to me is the “why” of this move, and things get a little more speculative from there. As an Apple device owner myself, I don’t see why this would be of interest to someone like me when Apple’s TV app is already built into every iPad, iPhone, and Mac. If you have an iPhone and really want to subscribe to Apple TV+, I think you can just subscribe through the stock app. Now, you want to have as few apps on your screen as possible, right? Ok. To make things a little more efficient, you can incorporate your Apple subscription within the Prime Video app.
On the other hand, if you’re an Android device owner with Prime Video, there’s enough content on Apple TV+ right now to justify spending an extra $10 a month on how great it is. There may be a debate as to whether or not. ted lasso teeth. There’s also the argument that this is Apple TV+ chasing scale, so to speak, catching up with the much larger Prime Video, which reportedly has hundreds of millions of users. . But again, a significant portion of these Prime users include Apple device owners who already have Apple’s TV app. right there.
To me, this feels like a “why not” move on Apple’s part. After all, Prime Video already allows users to add add-on subscriptions to similar services like Max, Paramount+, and AMC+. So for a company as big as Prime, it doesn’t make much sense for Apple to be left off that list, right? For example, Apple SVP Eddy Cue addressed this very point in his announcement tonight.
“We want to bring Apple TV+ and our library of award-winning series and movies from the world’s best storytellers to as many viewers as possible. We’re excited to offer an incredibly wide range of viewing options.”
Well then, here you go. Personally, I prefer to have all these services in separate apps. I’ve never really enjoyed one all-encompassing app where all of these exist as separate tiles inside. Especially with all the streaming apps getting more and more cluttered, but that’s a rant for another day.
