Without testing consumer wearable technology against medical-grade devices, it’s difficult to know whether a smartwatch on your wrist or a smart ring on your finger is truly accurate. There’s been a lot of talk about which smart rings are the most accurate at sleep tracking. Now you get more than a chat.

A new study published in the peer-reviewed publication Sensors found that compared to the “gold standard” of sleep assessment (polysomnography or PSG), Oura Ring 3rd generation We tested it against Apple Watch Series 8 and Fitbit Sense 2 with 4 levels of sleep classification and found it to be the most accurate sleep tracker.

The study, conducted by researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, involved 35 healthy participants who wore all three devices and were monitored overnight by PSG.

Oura Ring 3 offers up to 7 days of battery life and sleep and activity tracking technology.

“Ouraling did not differ from PSG in estimating wakefulness, light sleep, deep sleep, and REM sleep,” the researchers wrote in the study. Please note that Oura is funding this study, and the study’s lead author, Dr. Rebecca Robbins, is serving as Oura’s medical advisor.

Oura Ring Gen 3 was 5% more accurate than the Apple Watch Series 8 and 10% more accurate than the Fitbit Sense 2, the study found. The popular sleep and health tracker Ring also had the highest sensitivity for detecting both wakefulness and sleep, while the Apple Watch had the lowest. Fitbit received middling scores in both tests.

According to the release, “While the Oura Ring neither significantly underestimated nor overestimated any of the four sleep stages, the Apple Watch overestimated light sleep by an average of 45 minutes and deep sleep by an average of 43 minutes.” That’s what it means.

Oura’s sleep staging algorithm, which uses machine learning techniques and “one of the largest wearable sleep datasets,” was able to achieve 79% agreement with polysomnography in four stages of sleep classification, according to Oura. This is what research has revealed.

“Unlike other devices, Oura Ring can more reliably estimate the time spent in each of the different sleep stages,” said Raphael Vallat, sleep scientist and lead machine learning scientist at Oura. Masu.

By monitoring health data such as heart rate, body temperature, and blood oxygen, wearable technology is now making it possible for people who are unable to see a doctor regularly to keep track of their sleep and activity patterns. Ta. This latest news on sleep accuracy could be exciting for the future of Oura and the smart ring market as a whole.

“While polysomnography remains the gold standard for sleep assessment, wearable technology has the potential to measure sleep continuously, less intrusively, and more naturally,” Robbins said in the release. “This is a more scalable solution for sleep measurement.”
