Chinese police detained four Taiwanese employees. Hon Hai Precision IndustryIt is the latest in a series of restraints that have shaken investor confidence in the country, which is Apple’s main assembly partner.
Elsie Tsai, a spokeswoman for the Straits Exchange Foundation, a semi-official Taiwanese organization, said all four employees are Taiwanese and provide administrative support to Taiwanese in mainland China.
The council said in a statement that the employees had not harmed Hon Hai’s interests in any way, citing the company’s understanding. The city council said the incident may have been the result of abuse of authority by some local police officers.
Local media in Taiwan reported that four Hong Hai employees were detained earlier this year.
Representatives for Foxconn had no immediate comment on Thursday, a public holiday in Taiwan. The Taiwan Affairs Office in mainland China also did not immediately respond to a faxed inquiry.
