Apple finally rolled out the first wave of Apple Intelligence, also known as AI features, to iPhone, iPad, and Mac users in its latest update on Monday. Notably, Apple Intelligence was first announced at WWDC 2024, but the new feature didn’t arrive in time for the iPhone 16 launch in September.

Many Android smartphone manufacturers, including Google and Samsung, are already bringing AI capabilities to their devices, but Apple’s marketing push for Apple Intelligence is focused on user privacy. At its WWDC event in June 2024, Apple said that many of its new AI capabilities will run entirely on-device, with more complex tasks managed through private cloud computing powered by Apple silicon. The Cupertino-based tech giant also says that user data is never stored or exposed, and that independent experts can examine the code running on Apple silicon to verify its privacy efforts. he claimed.

iOS 18.1 compatible devices:

The iOS 18.1 update is rolling out to a variety of devices starting with iPhone SE (2nd generation), but Apple Intelligence features are only available on some devices. Here’s a complete list of all Apple devices that support new AI features:

What’s new in iOS 18.1?

1) Updated writing tools and email app:

The new update introduces a system-wide set of writing tools that let users polish their text by rewriting, proofreading, and summarizing it across a variety of Apple apps, including Mail, Messages, Pages, and more. .

iOS 18.1 gives the Mail app a much-needed overhaul, using Apple Intelligence to detect time-sensitive emails and prioritize them to the top of your list. On the other hand, users can also read email summaries without having to open each message. Additionally, Apple is introducing a Smart Reply feature in its Mail and Messages apps that analyzes the context of a message and generates a quick, AI-powered response.

2) Improved Siri:

Apple’s voice assistant Siri finally gets a complete makeover with the iOS 18.1 update, making it more natural, more deeply integrated into your system, and better able to understand complex commands. The first big change to Siri is the addition of a glowing light that wraps around the edges of the screen when the voice assistant is activated. Siri also has improved language understanding, so it can now understand what you’re saying even if you pause or change sentences mid-sentence.

Additionally, users can enter commands by enabling “Type to Siri” mode. This mode can be activated by double-tapping the bottom of the screen.

3) Photos app overhaul:

iOS 18 also brings major improvements to the Photos app, making it easier for users to find their favorite memories among photos and videos. The app also features natural language search, allowing users to find the moment they’re looking for simply by describing their situation with prompts like “Maya skateboarding in a tie-dyed shirt.”

iOS 18.1 also introduces long-awaited features that Android users have enjoyed for years. Apple now lets users remove unwanted objects from their photos with a new cleanup tool. AI-powered tools can automatically detect unwanted objects and people in images. Users can also use circle or brush gestures to manually select the parts of the image they want to clean up.

4) Focus mode by AI:

iOS 18.1 introduces a new focus mode called “Reduced Interruptions” that uses AI to analyze the content of your iPhone’s notifications, ensuring only important updates can disrupt your concentration.

Users can also override notification settings for specific apps and users, similar to functionality prior to iOS 18.1. There’s also a new toggle called “Intelligent Breakthrough and Silencing” that applies similar AI notification detection to the existing Focus mode.

5) Call recording and transcription:

iPhone users had to wait a long time until Apple announced at WWDC 2024 that it would finally bring call recording functionality to iOS 18. In addition to providing the option to record calls, iOS 18.1 now gives users access to call logs and call logs. Overview of recordings within the Notes and Phone app.
