When considering devices for academic purposes, students are struggling to decide between laptops and tablets. Budget constraints often force you to compromise on one option or the other.
If you decide to buy a tablet, there is a way to turn it into a work computer, provided you choose the right product. To help you choose the right device, we’ve compiled a list of things to keep in mind.
Always get the biggest choice possible

Tablets are fun when they have a great display. If you’re looking for a tablet that can also double as a work computer, we recommend choosing one with the largest possible screen. If not, we recommend purchasing a tablet with at least an 11-inch screen. If you are a gamer, also look for other display parameters such as a higher refresh rate.

The tablet runs on Android or iPadOS. However, Android has several options. For example, OxygenOS 14 (review) on the OnePlus Pad 2 offers a completely different user experience compared to OneUI 6 on the Galaxy Book S10+ or iPadOS.
If you already have an iPhone, an iPad is a better option as it allows you to easily share files and the internet. If you’re an Android smartphone user, consider an Android tablet or iPad.
Check if you have an official keyboard folio

Some tablets come with their own keyboard case that instantly turns them into a computer. In most cases, keyboard cases are sold at a discount when purchased with your tablet. If not, there are alternatives like the Logitech K480, which is compatible with most Android tablets and iPads and can be converted into a full-fledged computer.

Look for tablets that support a stylus as well as a keyboard. This is useful not only for taking notes during class, but also for sketching on a digital canvas or signing documents. If you’re considering an iPad, buy the Apple Pencil. On the Android side, there are a number of tablets that support stylus, and some even include a stylus as part of the package.
Find a tablet with cellular connectivity

Some tablets come with 4G/5G connectivity options. In fact, some tablets even allow voice calls. For students who are constantly on the go, purchasing a tablet with cellular connectivity makes a lot of sense. Your tablet can also be used as a Wi-Fi hotspot to connect other smartphones and laptops to the Internet.

If you’re thinking about using your tablet as a computer, you might end up storing a lot of data on the device. Therefore, it is important to choose a device with more storage. We recommend purchasing a tablet with at least 256 GB of internal storage. You can also look for options with a microSD card slot for additional storage expansion.
Check if you have a high-speed USB-C port

Most tablets, including budget options, come with a USB-C port. However, only a few options include high-speed USB 3.0 class USB-C storage, which not only allows for faster data transfers, but also allows you to connect to an external monitor or TV. This is very important if you want to do any serious work on your tablet.

Always choose a tablet with the largest possible battery and fast charging if possible. Most tablets, including the iPad, come with a charger, and most tablets can last a full day without any issues. However, some devices like the OnePlus Pad 2 charge much faster, so you can save time charging your device and focus on other things in life.
