Press and hold to cast new features on Pixel tablets and Pixel phones

Google’s magical Tap to Cast feature, teased at CES 2024, is finally coming to select Pixel smartphones and Pixel tablets. This new feature makes it easy to transfer music between your Pixel phone and Pixel tablet by simply holding your phone close to your tablet. Mention of this new feature was included in October’s Pixel Drop, but it’s now visible to users and is officially called “Hold close to Cast.”

You may be wondering how this magical musical takeover is possible. Well, it probably uses UWB (Ultra Wideband) technology. Think of it as an ultra-high-precision, short-range radio signal that allows your phone and tablet to communicate seamlessly. So, with the power of UWB, you can simply hold your phone close to your docked Pixel tablet and your music will seamlessly transfer from one device to another without any taps or menus required. .

UWB technology is used to achieve this, so you’ll need a fairly new Pixel smartphone for this to work. According to Google, the list of supported devices includes Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, Pixel Fold, Pixel 9 Pro Fold, and Pixel Tablet. And for now, Google says it will work with Spotify and YouTube Music, but expect more apps to join soon.

Enabling this feature is easy if you have the appropriate hardware. Go to your Pixel’s Settings app,[Google]>[すべてのサービス]Tab >[キャスト オプション]Move to. Next, you’ll see the “Hold close to cast” settings option, tap on it to toggle it on. You’ll also need to make sure your Pixel Tablet is docked and both devices must be on the same WiFi network.

You can cast YouTube music when you bring it close.
Cast Spotify by getting close

Please note that “Keep away until cast” is still rolling, so you may not see it right away. This new feature, along with the new Home Control screensaver and app windowing, all combine to make the Pixel Tablet a powerful Android tablet. If you see the new “Press to Cast” feature on your Pixel, let us know in the comments below.
