Yonac Thereminator 2 is the second generation of the popular pocket theremin synthesizer app now available for iOS and macOS.
I’ve been using iPhones and iPads as music tools for over 13 years, if not more. If you compare the platforms from back then to the current platforms, you’ll see significant progress. The developers at Yonac were working on this game very early on.
Among other releases is the app Thereminator, which hit the iOS market in 2008, two years before the original iPad was introduced. This is an app that takes the idea of a touch theremin, also known as a pocket theremin. 16 years later, Yonac Thereminator 2 is now available for download. This is a major upgrade.
Yonak Terminator 2
Thereminator 2 is the successor to the 2008 app, which has been completely redesigned from playability to synth engine to modern connectivity. It has now reached the level of 2024 apps.
Version 2 remains a touch-controlled virtual theremin synthesizer, playable horizontally (pitch) and vertically (expression). Yonac has added 51 scales and selectable music key functions to bring you a great playing experience.
We’ve also added a new note snap feature that allows you to adjust the glide between adjacent notes by any amount.
Virtual analog engines have come a long way. It’s more comprehensive and uses the latest Yonac modeling code. The synth engine offers eight waveforms with an eight-octave frequency range, including the original and unique Thereminator waveform.
Additionally, it features a virtual analog filter with cutoff and resonance controls. Equipped with a multi-FX processor to refine your sound. Includes adjustable vibrato and tremolo, unique drive, custom chorus/expander effects, and a modeled vintage tape delay that can self-oscillate.
While playing the synth pitch horizontally, you can expressively manipulate vertical parameters with a touch. Here you can map volume, filter, vibrato and tremolo to vertical touch.
Another big new feature in Yonac Thereminator 2 is AUv3 support, which turns your app into a plugin for iOS and macOS hosts. In addition, there is also MPE support using special adaptations of the protocol. It also has MIDI support, so you can also play using a MIDI keyboard.
Yonac ships Thereminator 2 with over 50 factory presets in the preset browser and the ability to save an unlimited number of new patches. Additionally, the app is also compatible with macOS Apple Silicon.
If you purchased the app on iPhone or iPad, you can also use the app standalone on macOS (Apple Silicon) or with the AUv3 plug-in for Ableton Live, Logic Pro, and other AUv3-compatible DAWs.
first impression
I’m so happy that one of my first apps is back with a new look and improved engine. Having replaced much of the Animoog Z in my setup over the years, I’m looking forward to seeing how versatile the Thereminator 2 will be.
Yonac Thereminator 2 is currently available at an initial price of $3,99 instead of $7,99. Runs as a standalone app and AUv3 plugin on iOS (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch) and macOS (Apple Silicon only).
