Why I’m still betting on a Samsung Galaxy Chromebook Plus with 16GB RAM

As of yesterday, the Samsung Galaxy Chromebook Plus went from “coming soon” to “in stock.” For those who have already ordered, or chose to stop by their local Best Buy store yesterday, the process of getting familiar with Samsung’s latest Chromebook has officially begun. Our own unboxing footage will be released soon, and we’re just beginning the story of the Galaxy Chromebook Plus in earnest as users begin to seriously consider what they think of this sleek, lightweight AMOLED-powered Chromebook. is.

And while we were initially led to believe that this device was a single spec, we always thought that might not be the case. You may remember the fact that before the Galaxy Chromebook Plus was officially announced, we found Geekbench 6 results showcasing a version with an Intel Core 5-120U processor and 16 GB of RAM. Two notable upgrades from currently available models.

And just last week, we reported that a model with the Intel Core 5-120U was already available in the UK on Samsung’s UK-based website. It has the same 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, but That opened the door wide open to the idea that the model we saw tested a few months ago might actually exist.

Let’s think about this for a moment with me. Would it be harder to handle a more powerful processor or replace a RAM stick in this thin/light chassis? Don’t think too long. Obviously it’s much more difficult to ensure that the thermals and chassis will work with another upgraded processor. They could replace the RAM without a second thought.

So if you already have a Core 5 model (and it does), a version with a boost in the RAM department is fine. And honestly, if you’re going to do that, replace the storage with a 512GB unit as well. Samsung Galaxy Chromebook Plus with Intel Core 5-120U, 16GB of RAM, and 512GB of storage? Call it $899 and make it available only on Samsung.com and I guarantee it will sell in good numbers.

Will that happen? If the adoption rate of the base model is high enough, it certainly will be. The market for $899 Chromebooks is still small, so they need to enter the enterprise channel to really make sense. But if Samsung makes this spec generally available, I think it will move quite a few units. I still think the current standard is sufficient for 95% of users, but I always love options. I hope Samsung provides them to us.
