What I learned from three years of running Windows 11 on “unsupported” PCs

These aren’t the only features that are standard or near-standard on modern midrange and high-end laptops. There are also high-resolution, high-density displays. The adoption of portrait screen aspect ratios such as 16:10 and 3:2 increases the available vertical screen space. USB-C charging eliminates the need for your own power brick. And a backlit keyboard!

The ThinkPad X230 I purchased does not have a backlit keyboard. do Place a weird little book light next to your webcam to illuminate your keyboard. If you’re the type of person who already tends to describe junky old laptops as “decent,” this is great in a way, but it’s not all that practical.

Even if you put aside aging, swollen, or damaged batteries and the extra wear and tear that comes with transporting them, laptops from the last three or four years ago still come with useful upgrades and features in addition to faster speeds. It has a lot of things. That doesn’t mean your old laptop is useless. Obviously helpful. However, this is also where an upgrade can make a bigger difference than just getting Windows 11 support.

some security concerns

Because some older PCs don’t meet Windows 11’s more stringent security requirements, PC manufacturers often stop updating their systems long before Microsoft ends support for them.

Windows 11 system requirements focused primarily on previously obscure security features such as the TPM 2.0 module, hypervisor-protected code integrity (HVCI), and mode-based execution control (MBEC). It was controversial. The TPM module, among other things, allows you to seamlessly encrypt your PC’s local storage, and HVCI separates the data in memory from the rest of the operating system, making it difficult for malicious software to steal it (MBEC is just a CPU technology) which makes HVCI faster, but can significantly reduce performance on older systems).

Apart from these specific security features, there are other concerns when using older PCs, some of which are the same as those mentioned for macOS as Apple has ended support for Intel Macs. Microsoft patches can protect against software security vulnerabilities in Windows. Additionally, even fully patched and fully supported systems may not have all the latest BIOS fixes installed, so firmware-based vulnerabilities may not be partially mitigated. Masu.
