Google Meet is currently upgrading its personal video calling experience, and as part of that the “original” app is no longer working.
Despite the Google Meet brand’s victory in 2022, the “Google Duo” app had even more installs (5 billion vs. 500 million as of today). Therefore, the Google Duo app has changed to Meet and continues to receive new features: play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.tachyon.
But Google has to maintain the original Meet app, which was originally called “Hangouts Meet” but became “Meet” after the legacy branding was retired, and which it told business customers to download. I was there.
The icon has become green and “(original)” has been added to the app name. For the past two years, the app has continued to work with code- or link-based meetings, and also prioritized link interception.
Today, when I tried to join a call via the meet.google.com URL, I got a screen that said, “This version of the Meet app is no longer available.” You’ll be redirected to the new app, which offers “new features like reactions and the ability to call other Meet users directly,” and allows you to remove the old app.
New users will no longer be able to access play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.meetings.
Google is now adding features to Meet for individuals that it first introduced for business customers. This includes an updated UI, audio-only on-the-go mode, live captioning, and more expressive features.
