Mozilla promised two years ago to provide a true Android version of its Thunderbird email client. The app has finally come out of beta and is now available for anyone to try.
Mozilla has finally released the final version of its Thunderbird email client for Android devices. Development of Thunderbird for Android began in 2022 when Mozilla acquired the rights to K-9 Mail, a popular open source email client for Android. The app was eventually acquired to be rebranded as the Thunderbird app, and today we’re witnessing the final culmination of that effort. It’s powerful and privacy-focused, allowing you to add additional features to your existing email provider, such as OpenPGP email encryption.
This release comes just a month after the beta version of the app was released. If you ever get a chance to play this, you’ll probably feel right at home here. This app may also continue to improve over time. The biggest hurdle at this point was getting around the K-9 Mail migration. Speaking of which, there is an option to switch from K-9 Mail to Thunderbird for Android. At this time, both email clients are maintained and published as separate listings on the Google Play Store, and while we do not know if the K-9 Mail app will eventually be discontinued, it is most likely That’s a high scenario.
Just because a project is completed doesn’t mean the road is over. This was released just a month after beta, so some bugs may have slipped through the cracks. K-9 Mail has always been one of the most robust email clients on Android, and by extension it should be just as robust. If you need a new email client, give it a try.
Thunderbird can be downloaded on the Google Play Store, and the APK download is done on GitHub. Mozilla says a list of F-Droids will be published soon.
