The new iPad mini is equipped with the A17 Pro chip that debuted in the iPhone 15 Pro model, but the iPad version of the chip has one drawback.
According to Apple’s technical specifications, the iPad mini 7’s A17 Pro chip has a 5-core GPU, while the iPhone 15 Pro model’s chip has a 6-core GPU. This means that the iPad mini’s graphics performance will be slightly lower than the iPhone 15 Pro model, but most customers are unlikely to notice this difference when using the device.
A small percentage of the A17 Pro chips manufactured for iPhone 15 Pro models likely had defective GPU cores, leading Apple to completely disable them and use those chips in the new iPad mini. It may have been recovered by doing so. This process is called “binning” and maximizes yield and reduces waste in the supply chain.
Apple says the new iPad mini’s A17 Pro chip delivers up to 30% faster CPU performance and up to 25% faster GPU performance compared to the previous model’s A15 Bionic chip. Actual benchmark results for the iPad version of the chip are not yet available, but the performance claims promoted by Apple are usually accurate.
Given that the new iPad mini supports Apple Intelligence, it likely has 8GB of RAM, up from 4GB on the previous model. We’ll have more details on this as soon as possible through Apple’s developer tools Xcode and teardowns, so stay tuned.
