Telegram announced an update this week with several new features, but one is particularly interesting. The platform allows businesses to use Telegram for phone number verification, which could be more convenient than using methods such as SMS.
Telegram offers new platform for phone number verification
As detailed in Telegram’s blog post, businesses often have to spend a lot of money on systems that authenticate phone numbers to verify a user’s identity. With this in mind, Telegram now offers its own number verification solution.
“We know from our own experience how much it costs businesses to verify their customers’ phone numbers. Starting today, every business, app, and website can send verification codes via Telegram. Telegram codes are faster, cheaper, more secure and more convenient than SMS and other alternatives,” the company said.
Telegram users receive all verification codes in a special chat within the app. Just tap to copy the code, open the page and complete verification. The messaging platform charges $0.01 per authenticated user. This is 1/50th of what SMS-based platforms charge businesses.

In addition to this new system, Telegram also announced several other new features. These include gifts you can send to other users, a new interface for video calling on iOS, moderation improvements with more options for reporting abuse, and more.
Telegram for iOS is available for free from the App Store. To access all new features, please make sure you have the latest version of the app installed on your device.
