Only 14% of users find AI features helpful, and only 12% say they use ChatGPT or Gemini.

Both Apple and Google are committed to artificial intelligence, with Apple preparing to make its Apple Intelligence suite of AI capabilities publicly available next week. This includes the integration of ChatGPT, and Google is announcing Live, a mobile conversation experience that lets users converse with Gemini. .

The question is, is this what smartphone users really want? And how much does that factor into purchasing decisions? So far, the answer seems to be pretty modest, according to a new study published Friday by CNET.

The survey of 2,484 adults, including 2,387 smartphone owners, found that 25% of smartphone owners do not find AI features useful, while 14% do. Only 18% said consolidation was their main motivation for upgrading their phone.

What’s important to them is longer battery life, with more than 60% saying it would lead them to buy a new phone, 46% saying more storage and 38% saying better camera features.

When asked what they thought about AI specifically, 34% expressed concerns about privacy and 19% said they didn’t know how to use AI features on their phone. In fact, only 12% said they use AI tools like ChatGPT or Gemini, and just 10% said they used AI tools for photo editing, image creation, or text creation. .

Given the low propensity to use it, it’s no surprise that almost half of those surveyed, 45%, said they would not pay extra for AI features. Even if it is likely to be required in the future.

For example, as CNET points out, Samsung’s website states that the Galaxy AI feature will be “free on supported Samsung Galaxy devices until the end of 2025,” but after that it will be available on a monthly basis. You will need to subscribe to Gemini Advanced, which costs $19.99. . And Apple is likely to follow a similar path.

This does not mean that there will not be a market for these features in the future. In particular, a still small but not negligible percentage of both Gen Z and Millennials already say they’re excited about those features, with 20% of both. There is a generation that is excited about the capabilities of AI and finds it useful.

Furthermore, 15% of Gen Z and 16% of Millennials use AI on their smartphones for tasks such as photo editing, image creation, and text summarization and creation, while 20% of Gen Z and 19% of Millennials We use AI tools regularly. ChatGPT on smartphones, Google Gemini, etc.
