The Snapchat camera will soon be available from your iPhone’s lock screen, thanks to an iOS 18 feature. You can replace the standard camera app and flashlight with an app or shortcut action of your choice.
iOS 18 lock screen feature
One of the new features introduced in iOS 18 is the ability to change lock screen controls. Previously these were limited to the standard camera app and flashlight, but now you can substitute supported apps or use shortcuts to perform almost any other action .
The camera app icon was always redundant, since you could (and still do) access it by swiping from right to left, but that tended to be faster.
Snapchat camera support coming soon
Your app will need to add support for that feature. Engadget Snapchat reports doing so.
With an app update, Snapchat users will soon be able to launch the app’s camera directly from their iPhone’s lock screen.
Since your phone is still locked, there’s only so much you can do with apps when you open them this way, and the same goes for Snapchat.
Tapping the button launches Snapchat’s “camera only” mode. Technically, this allows you to create snaps, but there is a big caveat. The lock screen allows users to take photos, but they cannot add filters or post anything. To do so, you need to unlock your phone using Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode and open the actual app.
Of course, you must be running iOS 18.
An update to the app is expected to be rolled out later this week.
