According to Counterpoint Research, during the first phase of India’s festive season from September 26 to October 7, smartphone sales declined by 3% year-on-year (YoY). Over 13 million smartphones were sold during this period. Online channels contributed nearly 70% of total smartphone sales.
However, the combined value of these smartphones increased by 8% year-on-year, topping $3.2 billion for the first time.
Sales of premium smartphones (over £30,000) were up 7% year-on-year, while the ultra-premium segment (over £45,000) was up 12% year-on-year thanks to Apple and Samsung.
Apple’s iPhone 15 and iPhone 13 were the best-performing premium smartphones on Flipkart and Amazon, respectively.

For Samsung, sales on the Galaxy S23, S23 Ultra, and S23 FE boosted premium sales.
Since October 2, sales on offline platforms have increased and offers have improved. This reduced the urgency for consumers to buy during the first few days of a sale.
In the first stage, Samsung emerged as the best-selling brand in terms of both volume and value. The brand achieved double-digit growth with an 18% volume share and 22% sales value share.
Samsung’s Galaxy S23 was the best-selling premium Android device.
Apple’s sales grew by single digits on a volume basis. However, the strong performance of the iPhone 15, the best-selling premium device in the first wave, further increased its value.
Outside of the top five brands, Motorola grew the fastest in the first wave.
In the budget segment, Galaxy A14, Galaxy M35, Moto G85, Redmi 13 series, and Realme Narzo series were among the top sellers.
Counterpoint estimates that more than 35 million smartphones will be sold during India’s festive period, which ends after Diwali, an increase of 3% in volume and 9% in value compared to the previous year.
The Christmas season accounts for 20% to 25% of annual smartphone sales.
