Smartphone-enabled paper-based quantitative diagnostic platform transforms POC testing

Point-of-care diagnostics are critical to public health, providing rapid on-site testing that enables rapid diagnosis and treatment. This is especially beneficial in remote and underserved areas where access to laboratory resources is limited. By enabling immediate clinical decisions, point-of-care testing can reduce burden on healthcare systems and improve patient outcomes. Now, new research has proven the effectiveness of a smartphone-enabled paper-based quantitative diagnostic platform. This platform improves point-of-care diagnostics by providing increased accuracy, real-time data, and broader accessibility for fast, reliable testing.

This study focused on HueDx’s (Pennsylvania, USA) innovative platform, which consists of HueTools and HueLab. HueDx’s HueTools are artificial intelligence (AI) tools that reduce assay development from years to months, and HueLab’s customizable cartridges and apps create portable testing solutions that eliminate the need for traditional labs. Create. This work represents a significant advance in colorimetric diagnostics, overcoming past challenges in achieving accurate and consistent results in clinical chemistry settings without the need for additional hardware. The incorporation of smartphone technology enhances these capabilities, enabling quantification of previously qualitative assays and enabling real-time data collection and analysis. This will expand point-of-care testing, including at-home testing, to more healthcare providers and provide quantitative, actionable results.

The study found that the color correction system recovered images with near-perfect consistency, regardless of the original lighting conditions. In precision testing, the coefficient of variation almost doubled without color correction. Additionally, blanking, detection, and quantification limits were significantly improved using the HueDx pipeline. This study also demonstrated the effectiveness of the platform in calibrating and quantifying paper-based total protein assays, indicating its potential for use in point-of-care testing in various medical settings.
