Apple is poised to make significant changes with the iPhone 18 when the iPhone 18 series arrives in 2026. According to reliable sources on Weibo, the tech giant plans to leverage TSMC’s cutting-edge 2-nanometer manufacturing process for the A20 chips that will power these devices. This advancement is expected to significantly improve performance and efficiency.

Additionally, the iPhone 18 series is rumored to be the first to feature 12GB of RAM across the board, which would be a significant upgrade from the current 8GB RAM in the iPhone 16 lineup. This increased memory capacity allows for smoother multitasking and improves performance for demanding applications.

As first reported by MacRumors, Apple’s A20 chips will move from the existing InFO (Integrated Fan-Out) packaging to the more sophisticated WMCM (Wafer-Level Multi-Chip Module) packaging. This change offers several important benefits.

  • Enhanced integration: WMCM allows for seamless integration of multiple chips within a package, increasing design flexibility.
  • Optimized layout: Chips can be placed vertically or horizontally, maximizing space and improving communication efficiency.
  • Improved performance: This high-density packaging technology facilitates faster data transfer and improved overall performance.

TSMC has stated that mass production using the 2nm process will begin in 2025.

The iPhone 16 series comes with 8GB of RAM, but Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicts that the iPhone 17 Pro model will jump to 12GB in 2025. Based on today’s news, Apple intends to standardize this higher memory capacity across the iPhone 18 series.

Next year’s iPhone 17 lineup includes iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and All-new “iPhone 17 Air”. Similar smartphone lineup The iPhone 18, iPhone 18 Air, iPhone 18 Pro, and iPhone 18 Pro Max will be released in a year.
