A third device was rumored to be launching alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 for Samsung’s summer launch event, but it didn’t appear during the Galaxy Unpacked event in July. However, a mysterious third foldable model is expected to arrive by the end of October.
Details about Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Z come from industry publication FNNews. The model, likely named Samsung Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition, is expected to be released on October 25th.
According to discussions all summer, the Z Fold SE’s distinguishing feature will be its dimensions. It is reported to be 10.6mm when closed and 4.9mm when opened. In comparison, the Galaxy Z Fold6 measures 12.1mm when opened and 5.6mm when closed.
Google’s Pixel 9 Pro Fold is slightly thinner at 10.5 mm when closed, but slightly thicker at 5.1 mm when opened. Assuming most of your work on a foldable device is done when it’s open, the Z Fold SE has an advantage over the Google handset.
It’s a nice win over Google, but even this Special Edition can’t stand up against the Honor Magic V3. This foldable product took the market by surprise when it was launched in July. 9.2mm when closed and 4.4mm when open.
Nevertheless, this makes it Samsung’s thinnest foldable form factor on the market and in my opinion. There’s no doubt that we’re leaning heavily into the fashionable elements of this special edition (at the same time, many in Apple’s passionate community will be discussing the appropriation of the iPhone SE name).
Samsung will be hoping that this new model will bring its foldable device to consumers. According to Counterpoint Research, in the first quarter of 2024, Samsung lost its foldable market share lead to Huawei. With the international launch of the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition, there is an opportunity to launch in the holiday quarter.
