Samsung’s foldable lineup has only consisted of one new book-style Galaxy Z Fold and one new flip-style Galaxy Z Flip each year since 2020. This year saw the first expansion at the time, with the China/Korea exclusive Galaxy Z Fold “Special Edition” arriving earlier this week.
However, that may soon change. As highlighted by @Jukanlosreve on Twitter/X, Samsung is planning “3-4” new foldable smartphones and one foldable smartphone. This information was provided by Meritz Securities, but there is more context.
ZDNet Korea Samsung is reportedly considering a more affordable Flip device, similar to a “tri-fold” version of the Fold. This tri-fold tablet, perhaps similar to Huawei’s recent Mate XT, could be the tablet Melitz is referring to, but it’s hard to know for sure. Samsung is also rumored to be working on a rollable device for next year.
The same report also reveals that Samsung’s existing Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 are struggling. Sales were initially expected to be between 9 million and 10 million units, but the 2024 lineup did not get off to a strong start, and the target was later lowered to 7 million to 8 million units. Flips are said to be “particularly slow.” Earlier this year, Samsung acknowledged that the majority of Fold and Flip buyers were upgrading from the previous generation.
