design and display

Although they look similar, they have a luxurious feel

There are many similarities between the 40mm Galaxy Watch 7 and Galaxy Watch FE. Both feature a sapphire crystal glass shield and an aluminum frame. Both have 5 ATM and IP68 ratings, but the Watch 7 is a bit more rugged thanks to its 810H military-compliant design and Armor Aluminum 2 frame for added resistance to drops and scratches. This increases durability and makes it a better option for those who value longevity.

In terms of appearance, both watches are very similar. They have rounded, circular displays, but the Watch 7 has the edge with a slightly larger display size of 1.3 inches. The FE has a 1.2-inch panel, but both watches feature Super AMOLED screens with similar pixel densities, giving you a bright, crisp display on your wrist. Both are bright and colorful, so you can see them outdoors or in a pitch-dark room without any problems.

The dimensions are also very similar. Considering the Watch 7’s slightly larger footprint, it’s no surprise that it’s larger, although not by much. It measures 40.4 x 40.4 x 9.7 mm, while the FE measures 40.4 x 39.3 x 9.8 mm. The differences are minimal and they’re almost the same, so if this size fits your wrist, looks are the only thing that matters, the rest of the features matter.

Perhaps the biggest difference is that the Watch 7 also comes in a larger 44mm model, whereas the FE is limited to one size. So if you have a large wrist or just prefer chunkier watches, the Watch 7 will give you an immediate advantage.

performance and battery

Both watches can easily last a full day on a single charge.

Galaxy Watch 7 is powered by Exynos W1000 chip built on 3nm technology. It’s an efficient and powerful chip, and it’s faster than the Exynos W920 chip in the Galaxy Watch FE, which is built on the 5nm process that also powers the Galaxy Watch 5 series.

The memory and storage configurations are also slightly different, with the Watch 7 having 32GB of storage and 2GB of RAM. The FE comes with half the storage at 16GB and 1.5GB of memory, which is enough to house several fitness tracking apps and power the watch. Both watches work well on a day-to-day basis, but the Watch 7 definitely runs a little more smoothly, especially over the long term. The Watch 7 also benefits from more efficient Bluetooth 5.3 technology and improved GPS tracking.

And finally, when it comes to battery, the 40mm model has a larger 300mAh battery, and the 44mm model has an even bigger cell, so the Watch 7 may last longer than the FE. But we found that for power users and those with active lifestyles, there can still be some challenges by the end of the day.

The FE has a 247mAh cell inside, which should last most users a full day on a single charge. This is especially true for users who don’t rely heavily on GPS or other features that can drain the battery quickly. That being said, both watches can easily run out of battery with heavy use, but casual users and regularly active users should be able to get a full day of use out of them.

The charging situation isn’t as good on the FE as it comes with a slower wireless charging standard, but the Watch 7 supports 10W wireless charging. The FE took about two hours to fully charge, while the Watch 7 took less than an hour and a half. It’s not very fast, but it makes a difference when you need a quick refill here and there between routines.

software, health and fitness

Reliable and accurate fitness tracking

Both the Galaxy Watch 7 and Galaxy Watch FE come with great health tracking features like sleep monitoring, heart rate monitoring, and hundreds of sports activities. The main tracking feature missing from FE is sleep apnea.

The watch runs on WearOS and offers compatibility with hundreds of apps and watch faces from the Google Play Store. Samsung also has some great built-in options. Both watches come with Samsung Wallet, providing a quick and easy payment solution using just the watch. Don’t forget that you can also store your ID and other digital cards here.

We found the new Galaxy Watch 7 to be slightly more accurate and precise when it comes to tracking health, but the Watch FE also lived up to our expectations. Both smartwatches are perfectly capable of handling most tasks, including sports activities and everything else. Ideal for general users who want to get or stay in shape and record their daily workouts and routines.

Which one is right for you?

The Galaxy Watch 7 may be a small iterative upgrade to the Galaxy Watch 6 series, but it still packs in a lot of welcome additions and enhancements. It has more accurate tracking, decent battery life on par with most other modern smartwatches, lots of customizable options, and compatibility with hundreds of popular apps, services, and watch faces.

The Galaxy Watch 7 may not be the massive improvement we were expecting from Samsung in 2024, but the company still made some significant improvements to improve health and fitness tracking in style. We were able to make significant improvements. The Watch 7 remains one of the best options for those looking for a premium experience that works seamlessly with Samsung’s Galaxy and other Android smartphones.

In contrast, the Galaxy Watch FE is also a great buy, but with a few caveats. This is basically a smartwatch repackaged in 2021 and offers some great features including all sports activities and ECG. It has most of the same software features as the higher-end Galaxy Watch 7, and at a more attractive and affordable price point.

You should expect slightly slower performance, a smaller battery, and less accurate tracking overall. Many users may not notice a difference, but serious smartwatch fans may notice a difference.

Samsung Galaxy Watch FE

The Galaxy Watch FE may be a repurposing of the 2021 watch in slightly flashier and more stylish colors, but it’s a more affordable smartwatch with nearly the same tracking features as the more expensive Galaxy Watch 7 series. Still an excellent option for those looking for one. It has a stylish design, a decent-sized display, and solid all-day battery life.
