Samsung Galaxy S25 wishlist: The biggest features I’m waiting for

With the Galaxy S24 lineup, Samsung has introduced a combination of practical and forward-looking upgrades, including extended battery life on the Galaxy S24 and S24 Plus and Galaxy AI on all models. Well, with the Galaxy S25, we expect Samsung to make strides in both of these areas.

Given Samsung’s emphasis on AI, the Galaxy S25 is likely to come with new Galaxy AI features. Samsung essentially said the same thing at its developer conference earlier this month, during which it teased the new One UI 7 software update that will debut on the S25 lineup.

Samsung’s current Galaxy AI features are promising, but I’d like to see the next version have a bigger impact on the overall phone experience. The current features feel very targeted to specific use cases that don’t come up all that often, like language translation and photo editing.

Otherwise, expect faster charging and optimization of the phone’s core elements such as the camera and display.

At this point, it feels like Galaxy AI and other non-Samsung generative AI features are just the beginning. Samsung offers obvious and practical uses such as erasing objects from photos, translating text conversations or real-time phone conversations, generating polished images from rough drawings, and previewing videos in slow motion and saving the results. We started by applying generative AI to the case.

But what I really want is a more dramatic rethink of how we perform basic tasks on our phones, making it easier and faster to use them. Of all the AI features available on Samsung phones so far, Circle to Search best embodies this idea by eliminating the intermediate step of launching Google to search for objects. More of this please!

We need new AI tools to help us manage the endless stream of notifications, data, and media on our phones. The new Screenshots app in the Pixel 9 lineup is a great example of making content within screenshots searchable, as is Apple Intelligence’s Notifications and Text Messages Overview (although I only had access to it in beta) .

Sally Hyesun Chung, executive vice president and head of framework research and development team at Samsung Electronics, hinted that Samsung’s next mobile software update could be in line with this theme. At the company’s developer conference, he said One UI 7 has the ability to understand user intent and “minimize complexity,” but did not provide specific details about the software. .

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra comes with an AI-powered feature called Circle to Search. Circle something on the screen to learn more about it.

This direction is consistent with previous comments made by Patrick Chomet, Samsung’s executive vice president and head of customer experience, to CNET about the company’s approach to software.

”[You’d] You don’t have to go into settings, you don’t have to look for the next action,” he said in a previous interview about how smart he wants Samsung’s phone software to be. [an] App. “

As I wrote in my review, I think Samsung should have given the Galaxy S24 Ultra the unique Galaxy AI features not available on cheaper models, as it was a missed opportunity. This not only justifies its high price, but also strengthens the Ultra in the phone’s name. Let’s see if we take a different approach next year.

Changing the way you use your phone isn’t easy. Given how much we rely on consumers for basic tasks, asking them to adopt new ways of doing things can be more destructive than helpful if done incorrectly. Possibly. I don’t expect Samsung to change its entire operating system in the coming months, but I’d like to see a step in a new direction like Circle to Search.

faster charging

We’re glad that Samsung has extended the battery life of the Galaxy S24. Now you just need faster charging. Galaxy S24 supports 25W wired charging, while Galaxy S24 Plus and S24 Ultra support 45W wired charging. And it’s been that way for years, at least since the Galaxy S20 generation.

Companies like OnePlus offer super fast charging speeds, so we’d like to see some improvement from Samsung. For example, the OnePlus 12 can be charged at 80W in the US and 100W in the UK, so my colleague Andrew Lanxon was able to fully charge the battery in just 26 minutes.

Samsung, it’s time to step up.

Reduces glare throughout the lineup

One of the most underrated features of the Galaxy S24 Ultra is the Corning Gorilla Armor on the screen to reduce glare and reflections. The screen is probably the most important part of your phone, so any improvement is welcome. My colleague Lexy Savvides was particularly taken with the S24 Ultra’s anti-glare screen, finding it easier to see on a sunny San Francisco day than the iPhone 15 Pro, Pixel 8 Pro, and Galaxy S23 Ultra.

However, this coating only applies to the Galaxy S24 Ultra. There’s a strong argument that Samsung should extend this to all Galaxy S25 models, as screen quality is very important on a phone. The Ultra’s huge screen, S Pen, and more sophisticated camera are more than enough to differentiate Samsung’s super-high-end phone from the rest of its lineup.

camera upgrade

Lisa Yidishko/CNET

When Samsung announced the Galaxy S23 Ultra in 2023, it made waves with its 200-megapixel main camera. But when it comes to photography, megapixels only tell one side of the story. Factors such as sensor size, pixel size, aperture, and the chip’s image signal processor are just as important as the megapixel count in determining a phone’s camera performance.

Samsung has continued to improve in these areas over the years, but now that it faces new competition from Xiaomi, it will need to work even harder if it truly wants to become the king of smartphone photography.

The Xiaomi 14 Ultra has a huge image sensor, bigger than the one found in the Galaxy S24 Ultra, and CNET’s Andrew Rankson says it has some of the best images we’ve ever seen from a phone. This allows you to create impressive shots with a wide dynamic range. . A larger sensor allows the camera to let in more light, improving image quality and reducing the need for noise reduction.

I would also like more practical editing functions. I fell in love with the iPhone 16’s Photo Styles feature, which applies effects to images customized to fit the scene. I’m not saying Samsung should launch its own version of photo styles, but I’m not saying Samsung should launch its own version of photo styles, but it could use generative AI to introduce new tools that improve the beauty of photos that have nothing to do with changing the content of the photos. I hope.

Overall, I expect Samsung to improve the camera, display, and charging speed while introducing new software features that make the phone feel more intuitive than before. Samsung typically releases new Galaxy S smartphones in the first quarter of the year, so expect more information to be announced in the coming months.
