Chicago (CBS) — Chicago police issue warning after two more deaths Seduced and Plundered Through Dating Apps This week on the city’s South Side.
The incidents occurred in the evenings and early mornings between September 15th and October 9th.
Police said the robbers used the app to lure victims by asking them to come and meet them at a specific address. The location was either an abandoned building or an empty building.
Upon arrival, the robbers approached the victim, after which other criminals appeared, displayed weapons and demanded property. In some cases, they demanded money from relatives through the Cash app or stole the victims’ cars before releasing them.
Place and time of incident:
- 800 block of East 90th Street Sept. 15, 6:46 p.m.
- East 90th Street 800 block Sept. 24, 12:21 a.m.
- 8100 block of South Marshfield Avenue, 6 a.m. Oct. 3.
- 8100 block of South Marshfield Avenue, Oct. 7 at 11:42 p.m.
- West 82nd Street 1600 block Oct. 9, 8:59 p.m.
The robbers are believed to have been two or three black males between the ages of 16 and 30. A small black handgun was used in the incident.
Police advise the public:
- always pay attention to your surroundings
- When using matching apps, take the time to get to know your partner. Someone targeting you for the sole purpose of robbery will ask you to meet them immediately.
- If you’re meeting a stranger, choose a public place to begin with. If you arrive and the location is not as described (a residence or an abandoned building), contact the person to confirm the address and leave if asked to come inside.
- Have a tracking feature in case your phone gets lost or stolen.
- Please report suspicious activity immediately.
- If you confront the perpetrator, remain calm.
- Remember any unique physical characteristics (scars, lameness, acne, teeth, etc.).
- Never pursue a fleeing perpetrator and provide information to the police.
- If a witness to the incident contacts you, ask for their contact information.
- Dial 9-1-1 immediately and remain at the scene as much as possible.
