The latest version of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon lineup will include Oryon processors of its own design, the company announced Monday at an event in Hawaii. Qualcomm says the chip will be 45% faster and use less energy than previous models.
Qualcomm’s products dominate the market for mobile devices that use the Android operating system. That makes the company’s technology updates an important part of many of the world’s smartphone makers’ efforts to compete with Apple.
Qualcomm’s decision to revert to its own processor design is part of Chief Executive Officer Cristiano Amon’s increasing investment in its technology. Snapdragon’s lineup had become increasingly reliant on Arm Holdings designs under previous leadership.
Developed by a team of engineers that Amon brought in following Qualcomm’s acquisition of startup Nubia, Orion is already a core part of the chips the company sells for laptops.
