Qualcomm unveils powerful Oryon processor to power smartphones

Qualcomm has introduced more powerful processors to give its smartphones laptop-level performance and ease the use of new artificial intelligence (AI) tools. Qualcomm announced at an event in Hawaii that its latest Snapdragon series will feature its Oryon processor design. The company claims this new chip is 45% faster and more energy efficient compared to its predecessor.

Qualcomm’s dominant position in the Android-powered mobile device market means that Qualcomm’s technology updates are critical to many of the global smartphone manufacturers that compete with Apple. Under CEO Cristiano Amon’s leadership, Qualcomm is refocusing on developing its own processors, marking a shift away from its previous reliance on Arm Holdings’ designs.

The Oryon processor was developed by engineers brought in when Qualcomm acquired startup Nuvia. This is a core component of the company’s laptop chips, which are sold as “AI PCs.” Software giant Microsoft is leveraging these machines to highlight new AI capabilities and challenge Intel’s dominance in the PC processor market.

Qualcomm said its new Snapdragon-powered smartphones will have significantly improved execution capabilities based on generative AI software.
