Peachtree City, Georgia – Two suspected porch pirates are in custody in Fayette County after being tracked down by Peachtree City police while eating at a Chick-fil-A restaurant. Police say the two men may be connected to similar types of crimes in other communities around metro Atlanta.
FOX 5 recently reported on an uptick in cell phone thefts across the metropolitan area minutes after new devices were delivered. Peachtree City Police say that is the case in this case.
Within minutes of the new iPhone being delivered, a man later identified by police as 24-year-old Oliver Capellan approached with shopping bags and was seen removing the package along with the phone from the front porch of the home. It was caught on a doorbell camera.
Surveillance video shows Capella wearing a sweatshirt that says “God Got Me.”
Several communities in the Atlanta metropolitan area are investigating similar crimes where new cell phones were snatched from front porches minutes after being delivered. Each time, the suspect carries a bag to make it look like he is making a delivery.
Peachtree City Police acknowledged that this arrest could be a major breakthrough in these cases.
Investigators say surveillance video from the home and nearby homes helped identify the getaway vehicle, which was then encountered by the suspects who apparently stopped for lunch at a Chick-fil-A in Peachtree City.
A second suspect, Carlos Ramirez Alvarez, was also charged.
Police believe the quality of home surveillance cameras helped make the arrest quickly. They say it’s a worthwhile investment. In this case, the victim was immediately notified that someone was near the front door. As soon as they saw the video of him receiving the package, they immediately called 911. Therefore, notifications and recording or saving videos are very important here.
