Not a bug: Google won’t “fix” Android 15 (and 14) materials to duplicate color palettes

There seems to be some weird behavior in Android 15 where the Material You theme’s color palette overlaps, leaving you with fewer choices, but Google says everything is working as intended. It seems there are.

For several years, Android smartphones have used Material U to generate a system-wide color palette. Typically, the system generates about 12 options, but users have noticed that some duplicates appear.

This problem came to light early on Android 15 Android Authority has discovered that a beta version has been released and appears to be continuing until the final release. Some people have noticed that out of a dozen options, sometimes two or three or more may be duplicates. In fact, this problem is not exclusive to the next generation, as it has been occurring all the way back to Android 13 or early Android 14 builds. Android 15.

As you might imagine, this should be considered a bug, but Google reportedly claims it’s not. When this issue was posted to Google’s issue tracker in September, it was marked as “Not fixed (intended behavior)”. Google suggested that if it doesn’t generate enough color palette options to fill the entire list, duplicate color palettes will fill the remaining space.

Well, as a behavior it seems pretty strange. Of course, there aren’t always dozens of color theme options. That’s not surprising, since there aren’t that many options for color combinations depending on the image or wallpaper. However, displaying duplicates instead can make users think they have more options than they actually do, which can be annoying.

I hope Google reconsiders and takes a different approach if the system can’t get around 12 color palette options. In my opinion, a better approach is to display nothing instead of filling the space with duplicates. We’ll see if Google changes its mind on this issue.
