Apple last updated Apple TV in October 2022, introducing a new smaller design, USB-C for the Siri remote, and an improvement from the A12 chip to the A15 chip. As we approach two years since its release, rumors regarding the next model of Apple TV are starting to emerge, but the situation seems a little bleak.
advance rumors
Initially, we expected an Apple TV refresh in the first half of this year. Obviously, that didn’t happen. In a Bloomberg report last month, reporter Mark Garman said:
The company has been working on an update to its Apple TV set-top box since the beginning of this year, but no new models have materialized, and steady inventory of the device suggests a new version won’t arrive soon.
So despite previous predictions that it would be released this year, it looks like the new Apple TV won’t be arriving anytime soon. Apple seems happy with its current models and continues to manufacture and restock them, something it doesn’t usually do when something is about to be updated.
Why the new Apple TV?
Many people are wondering whether Apple needs to update Apple TV. Sure, the A15 chip might be enough for general TV needs, but there are other reasons why Apple would want to upgrade the Apple TV anyway.
- Reduce costs and make TV boxes available to more customers
- apple intelligence
- game
Apple has lowered the starting price of Apple TV 4K from $179 to $129 in its 2022 refresh. But analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes the Apple TV box should be even cheaper in the next refresh, costing less than $100.
A sub-$100 price point should be the sweet spot for Apple TV, so we expect the next generation to be more affordable.
Apple may also implement Apple Intelligence inside the next-generation Apple TV, offering an A18 chip. The new Siri may not be the most useful on Apple TV, but Apple is making it possible for paired HomePods to take advantage of the chipset on Apple TV, allowing you to use your existing HomePod without the need for an expensive hardware upgrade. We know that the new Siri will be available.
Last but not least, games. Apple has been working with many game developers to bring more high-end games to iPhone, iPad, and Mac. But Apple TV is left out of the equation. Apple could develop a powerful Apple TV that can handle many high-end games, including ray tracing, but it’s unclear whether Apple wants to pursue that strategy.
