While the main line of iPhones is updated every year like clockwork, Apple’s midrange iPhone SE has only appeared in three versions since the first model was introduced in 2016. That’s set to change in 2025, with the next SE getting the best look yet. .
Details are taken from the Japanese Apple blog Makotakara. They report on a leaked mockup of the new iPhone SE, which many expect to launch in March 2025. The 3D-printed module was likely created by a peripheral manufacturer to create a “blank” iPhone SE to test in a new type of case.
These blanks don’t reveal any specific specs or options from inside the smartphone, but anything on the outside of the handset is fair game.
The most significant change to the previous iPhone SE design is the move to a design based on the iPhone 14. The first three iPhone SE models used a home button with integrated TouchID. The mainline has switched to a gesture-based system and FaceID recognition for unlocking. The iPhone SE is expected to follow that design, resulting in a more similar look to modern iPhones.
We can also see that this SE dummy has a single camera lens at the rear (next to the LED flash) and a camera island that includes sensors for the selfie camera and FaceID.
The blank doesn’t feature any new action or capture buttons, relying on a more traditional side-button approach.
The blanks on display here match many of the details that have already been suspected or leaked regarding the iPhone SE. While the key specs aren’t exact, Apple wants to include the Apple Intelligence-generated AI suite as part of the phone, which means it’s likely to run the latest A18 chipset. The same chipset powers the current iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 pro handsets.
The iPhone SE could be a smaller device, and it could be a cheaper device, but it should be on the same footing as the mainline iPhone models.
