Now that the iPhone 16 has been released, rumors about next year’s iPhone 17 series are starting to pick up steam. But through the mud and opaque tipster waters, we seem to be getting more of the same, which can be read as a confirmation of the leaks that have already been released.
Haitong International analyst Jeff Pu published a research note seen by Apple Insider outlining the details of the iPhone 17 Air (or Slim) and potential features of the iPhone 17 Pro model.
Pu’s note appears to confirm rumors that he has already released an iPhone 17 lineup, but with a few tweaks.
iPhone 17 Air/Slim
The iPhone 17 Air or Slim is said to have a 6.6-inch display and is thought to replace the Plus model in the lineup. What we already know.
According to Pu, it will be equipped with a 3nm A19 chip, similar to the A18 Pro of the iPhone 16 Pro model. This seems to confirm that the rumored 2nm chip will be delayed to iPhone 18, as reported earlier this week.
He also reiterated that the Slim will have 8GB of RAM, which is consistent with a memo he released in May.
In order to not only be ultra-thin but also have a lighter feel, Pu suggested making the Slim out of aluminum, similar to the existing Plus model.
As for the cameras, the company hinted that it will feature a single 48MP rear sensor and a 24MP front camera with integrated Face ID.
Vaguely, the memo claims that the iPhone 17 Slim will have an “all-new design,” but it’s not clear what that means.
iPhone 17 Pro model
Apparently, MacRumors also accessed Pu’s research notes and brought out various information, mainly about next year’s iPhone 17 Pro devices.
In his reading, Pu reiterated his previous claim that the Pro and Pro Max will feature a 48MP telephoto rear camera and a 24MP front camera. Currently, the Pro model comes with 12MP versions of both cameras.
He expects the Pro model to eventually jump to 12GB of RAM, something he claimed in May.
Apparently, Pu believes that the iPhone 17 Pro Max will run out of “a much narrower dynamic island” and attributes this to a smaller metalens for Face ID. It’s not clear how much smaller it will be, but this would be the first change for the island since the iPhone 14 Pro model.
He appeared to reiterate his previous claim that the Pro and Pro Max will maintain the 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch display sizes that debuted with the iPhone 16 version.
Finally, he said that Apple will not split the chip again and will use the same family of chips for all iPhone 17 models, just as this year’s entire iPhone 16 lineup has some form of A18 system-on-chip. It insisted on continuing to use the A19 chip.
Notably, Pu, while prolific, has a somewhat hit-and-miss track record when it comes to predicting Apple’s future moves. That said, his latest report appears to be consistent with similar rumors from more accurate Apple sources like Mark Garman and analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.
