GEORGE TOWN – Upgrading electronics seems to be on everyone’s attention in Malaysia now as the ringgit is trending higher.
Mr Robinson Quek, a store manager at Komtar Mall in Penang, said business was booming as more people took advantage of the ringgit’s appreciation to buy electronic devices.
He said high-end computers and laptops are selling quite well as prices have come down by several thousand ringgit.
“High-end computers used to fetch around RM10,000 (S$3,040), but now prices have come down significantly.
“Mobile phones are also quite cheap, especially American brands.
“We have a lot of customers coming in to get the new models,” he said.
Quek said if you can afford to replace or purchase new equipment, now is a good time to do so.
“Most IT products are based on the US dollar, so there is an impact on exchange rates,” he said.
At another IT store, sales manager Andrew Lim said business had improved from the past few months.
“Some people are worried that the currency will change again and want to buy their favorite equipment now.
“We’ve seen a 30% increase in sales this week, especially for tablets and laptops,” he said.
B. Premala, 67, said he had planned to buy a new tablet in early 2024, but the price proved too high.
“I’m glad I waited because I can save a few hundred ringgit now.
“The offer is great and I’m happy to see our currency doing better,” she said. Star/Asia News Network
