Apple plans to release a new M4 Mac lineup later this month with upgrades to the iMac, Mac mini, and MacBook Pro. Given the fact that the new iPad mini 7 was released through a press release, and not necessarily with a keynote, the same could happen with the Mac.
In any case, the new MacBook Pro will reportedly be available to customers starting November 1st.
Faster M4, M4 Pro, and M4 Max chips
Obviously, with the new round of MacBook Pros, you get a new round of chips. And that applies to the next MacBook Pro as well. The M4 chip, which first debuted in the iPad Pro earlier this year, will now appear alongside the high-end M4 Pro and M4 Pro chips.
The M4 chip has a 10-core CPU, up from the M3’s 8 cores. There are no specific leaks for the higher-end M4 chip, but the M4 Pro and M4 Max could see a similar increase in core count. M4 is about 20-25% faster than M3.
More consolidated memory
According to information found in the developer log, a previous report from Bloomberg indicated that all M4 Macs would launch with at least 16GB of RAM. The base model M4 MacBook Pro has 16 GB of RAM, which is upgradable to 32 GB. Previous M3 models started at 8GB and were upgradeable to 16GB or 24GB.
Currently, the M3 Pro starts with 18GB of unified memory, and the M3 Max starts with 36GB. Although this has not been directly confirmed, the M4 Pro and M4 Max will likely also have additional unified memory, likely 24 GB for the M4 Pro and 48 GB for the M4 Max.
3 Thunderbolt ports on all models
According to packaging leaks and unboxing leaks (yes, you read that correctly), the base model M4 MacBook Pro will have three Thunderbolt ports on all models. Previously, the base model of the M3 MacBook Pro lineup had only two Thunderbolt ports, both on the left side.
Wi-Fi 7 support
Apple is likely to support the Wi-Fi 7 standard in the upcoming M4 MacBook Pro as well as in the iPhone 16 lineup.
Wi-Fi 7 supports speeds up to 46 Gbps. This is more than five times faster than Wi-Fi 6E’s 9 Gbps. Wi-Fi 7 also operates on 320 MHz channels and supports the 6 GHz band, significantly reducing interference and signal congestion.
All models space black
According to the same packaging leak referenced earlier, the base model M4 MacBook Pro will likely come in space black, rather than space gray like the current model.
The current base model M3 MacBook Pro was ready for launch before the M3 Pro and M3 Max models, so it’s likely to come in Space Gray. This is because the M3 MacBook Pro initially ran the older macOS Ventura operating system, while the M3 Pro and M3 Max models ran the latest macOS Sonoma.
