Recent Samsung flagships like the Galaxy S24 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold 6, and Z Flip 6 all use slightly overclocked versions of Qualcomm’s top-of-the-line chipsets. While other companies were powered by Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, Samsung’s flagship products were powered by Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for the Galaxy. This was the same deal last year when Samsung’s flagships got the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for the Galaxy.
Qualcomm’s announcement of the Snapdragon 8 Elite at Snapdragon Summit 2024 in Hawaii today will definitely raise the question, “Will the Snapdragon 8 Elite appear in the Galaxy SKU?” We asked, but Qualcomm hasn’t said anything on the matter so far.
Qualcomm has not yet confirmed Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy
The main difference between Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy is that the latter’s main Cortex-X4 CPU core is clocked at 3.39GHz, almost 100MHz higher than the stock Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.
On the surface, this year’s chipset will follow a similar formula, but then again, the Snapdragon 8 Elite is a completely different beast. It does not use the Cortex core as the primary core. The Snapdragon 8 Elite is equipped with Qualcomm’s 2nd generation custom Oryon cores, and these prime cores reach an impressive peak speed of 4.32 GHz.
Qualcomm says it can expand on this further, so there may be a little more room for development if we do indeed see a special Snapdragon 8 Elite variant for Galaxy devices.
When we asked Qualcomm about the possibility of this SKU, we were met with a boilerplate response that the company doesn’t comment on its product roadmap. That’s not unexpected. After announcing the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 in October 2023, Qualcomm did not officially approve the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for the Galaxy until the second week of January 2024, when the Galaxy S24 series was launched.
However, Qualcomm confirmed that Samsung is among its partners launching Snapdragon 8 Elite-powered devices in the coming weeks. Recent rumors also suggest that the entire Galaxy S25 series could use Snapdragon 8 Elite exclusively.
In any case, Qualcomm’s outrageous new mobile platform will be available on at least one, if not all, of Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S25s, regardless of whether a special version is offered this time. It will be.
