Apple is expected to launch the iPhone SE 4 at some point in early 2025, meaning the affordable phone could be just a few months away. But even with launch time so close, a report has arrived with surprising new claims about this phone that could completely change what we expect.
Japanese Apple blog Mac Ohkara claims to have obtained a dummy unit of the iPhone SE 4 that shows the exact layout and features that will be included in the updated device.
According to the website, the iPhone SE 4 has nearly the same size and form factor as the iPhone 14, and the post says that existing iPhone 14 cases will fit the iPhone SE 4 without any issues.
Mac Otakara points out that the back will have a single camera lens and a slimline notch to house Face ID (but no dynamic island, as previous rumors suggested) ). The side of the dummy unit includes a volume switch in place of the action button, in addition to the usual volume and side buttons. Interestingly, the lack of an action button contradicts previous fall 2023 rumors, so we’ll have to wait and see which one turns out to be correct.
skepticism advised
We’ve seen claims similar to these in the past, so the latest details above aren’t particularly new. But what’s more interesting is Mac Otakara’s belief that there could be a second, larger version of the iPhone SE 4, something like an “iPhone SE Plus” that’s roughly the same size as the iPhone 14 Plus. It is.
I haven’t seen any other media claiming that a larger iPhone SE 4 is coming, so this seems like a new detail. But before you get too excited, it seems unlikely that will happen.
First of all, this concept came quite late, considering the iPhone SE 4 launch is only a few months away. Usually, new information is not announced this close to a rumored launch. The design and manufacturing process began many months ago, giving ample opportunity for leaks to leak into the public domain.
Considering there are already a lot of leaks and rumors about the iPhone SE 4, it’s likely that we’ve seen traces of it somewhere before.
Not only that, but Apple has never released an iPhone SE in two sizes before, so this will be a completely new move for the company. One would think that a strategic change of this magnitude would have been leaked a long time ago, except for the fact that this threatens to cannibalize the iPhone 16 Plus.
Therefore, it’s wise to be skeptical of the bigger iPhone SE 4 rumors. It’s possible that Apple will launch an iPhone SE that fits in the iPhone 14 form factor, but a “Plus” option feels unlikely. That said, we’ll know for sure when the iPhone SE 4 will be released in a few months.
