iPhone innovation looks different. The product line has undergone two decades of changes, and unsurprisingly, the recent updates are more evolutionary than revolutionary. But according to a leaked memo from Apple’s head of hardware, John Tarnas, we could be on the cusp of a major wave of iPhone innovation.
A new phase of iPhone innovation arrives
in him this weekend power on In the newsletter, Mark Gurman shared some notable promotions within Apple’s hardware team.
The team, led by John Tarnas, is promoting three current employees to the vice president level. One of them, Richard Ding, will become vice president of iPhone product design.
Garman writes:
In a memo to Apple’s engineering group, Ternas said Ding is responsible for the roadmap for future iPhones, calling the company’s next model “the most ambitious in product history.” . He said Ding “continues to help drive the exciting future of this iconic product line.”
This “most ambitious” citation is a pretty big claim for a product with such a long history.
Apple executives sometimes make exaggerated statements in public. Still, a quote like this would be worth noting.
But the fact that Ternus’s words are part of an internal memo gives them even more weight.
Clearly, Apple seriously considers future iPhone models to be its most ambitious versions yet.
Apple is always working on products that are years away, and Ternus’ words resonate with some of the coverage we’ve seen about future iPhones.
Roadmap includes iPhone 17 Air and foldable iPhone
For example, next year’s iPhone 17 Air is expected to be ultra-thin and introduce a radically new design with just one rear camera. It could be the next iPhone X-like moment for the iPhone.
And the first foldable iPhone is expected to arrive after 2026. It features a top-down folding design, with dimensions similar to existing iPhones when unfolded.
The timeline for these products is always subject to change, but if predictions hold true, we’ll see two major changes to the iPhone over the next two years. And Ternus knows what’s ahead for these models.
With the addition of these future products to this year’s Apple Intelligence upgrade, it’s shaping up to be an especially exciting time for iPhone.
