Apple sometimes indulges in hyperbole in its marketing. But every once in a while, a new iPhone or software feature can be truly “life-changing.” For me this year, that feature was iOS 18’s vehicle motion cues, which solved my motion sickness.
Features that changed my hurricane evacuation
It’s been a tough week for me.
I moved to Florida earlier this year and Milton was my first experience with a hurricane evacuation. My family and I drove north to Georgia and spent a few days there before returning home last night.
For most of the 10 hours we were in the car, I worked on my iPad Pro while my wife drove.
A few months ago, this would not have been possible.
why? This is because using a device in a car can cause motion sickness.
But in what feels like a miracle, Apple engineers fixed it.
How vehicle motion cues work
Vehicle Motion Cues is a new accessibility feature in iOS and iPadOS 18. To enable this,[設定]⇾ Accessibility ⇾[モーション]or use the Control Center toggle.
When enabled, it does something simple yet innovative.
A small dot is placed on the screen of the device and moves with the movement of the car.
Therefore, as the car moves to the left, the point also moves. When you try to go straight again, they stop. Do you want to stop? As the speed decreases, the points move gradually.
How can tiny moving dots solve motion sickness?
Here’s Apple’s explanation:
Research shows that motion sickness is commonly caused by a sensory discrepancy between what a person sees and what they feel, and some users use an iPhone or iPad for comfort while riding in a moving vehicle. may not be available for use. With vehicle motion cues, animated dots at the edge of the screen represent changes in vehicle movement, reducing sensory conflict without interfering with the main content. Using sensors built into iPhones and iPads, Vehicle Motion Cues recognizes when you’re in a moving vehicle and reacts accordingly.
That seems silly and too simplistic.
But at least for me it works.
iOS 18: Eliminate motion sickness
With iOS and iPadOS 18, you can now use your iPhone and iPad for hours without getting motion sickness. Previously, it was almost unusable.
As a result, this week’s hurricane evacuation was very chaotic, but I was still able to work comfortably on my iPad Pro in the passenger seat.
And it was life-changing.
