iOS 18.2 enables the next wave of Apple Intelligence features. First, it includes Apple’s new Image Playground app. This app lets you create “fun images” in seconds just by typing, and offers two styles: animation and illustration. There are also Sketch styles that will be added in a future software update.

In addition to being a standalone app, Image Playground also integrates directly into apps like Messages and Mail.

source character support

iOS 18.2 also supports Genmoji. Genmoji is an Apple Intelligence feature that can generate custom emojis based on text descriptions. Apple describes this feature as follows:

Taking emojis to a whole new level, users can express themselves by creating original glyphs. Just enter a description and the source character will appear with additional options. Users can also create source characters for their friends and family based on their photos. Like emojis, Genmoji can be added inline to messages or shared as stickers or tapback reactions.

Here’s how to use it:

ChatGPT integration

Added option to access ChatGPT when working with Siri in iOS 18.2. Apple says Siri “leverages ChatGPT’s expertise where it’s beneficial,” such as answering global knowledge questions and understanding images and documents.

You can also sign in to your ChatGPT account in the Settings app and disable the prompt that appears every time Siri tries to hand off commands to ChatGPT. However, Apple notes that you do not need to log in with a ChatGPT account, nor do you need to enable or use the ChatGPT integration.

Writing tool updates

Additionally, ChatGPT is integrated with writing tools, and you can use the new “Create” option to generate text related to your chosen topic. This integration also allows you to create “mixed styles” images using ChatGPT’s image tools.

iOS 18.2 also has a new “Describe Changes” feature for the Burner tool. This feature allows you to be more specific about the changes you want Apple Intelligence to make to your text.

visual intelligence

For iPhone 16 users, iOS 18.2 Beta 1 adds new Visual Intelligence features that Apple showed off last month. A long press on the camera control activates this new visual intelligence mode, allowing you to learn more about what’s around you.

You can take a photo of something and search Google for similar images, or you can send it to ChatGPT for more information. You can also find restaurant hours and reviews, add events from flyers to your calendar, and quickly identify dogs by breed.

image wand

iOS 18.2 adds Image Wand functionality as part of Apple Intelligence in the Notes app. “Rough sketches can be turned into engaging images, and users can also select empty spaces and use the surrounding context to create images,” Apple explains.

Finally, iOS 18.2 brings Apple Intelligence support to more regions.

iOS 18.2 Beta 1 also brings dramatic changes to the Mail app. The biggest update here is the new on-device classification system. The Mail app can now automatically organize and categorize your emails into four different categories:

  • Primary: Personal and time-sensitive emails
  • Transactions: Confirmations and Receipts
  • Updates: News and social media notifications
  • Promotions: Marketing emails and coupons

The Mail app also features larger contact photos and a new digest view of all related emails from a particular business. iOS 18.2 also includes some other interface tweaks to the Mail app, including a clearer distinction between new and old emails.

  • call filtering
  • browser app
  • password and code
  • keyboard

EU changes

Apple tells iPhone users in the European Union that iOS 18.2 includes previously announced changes to the browser selection screen. This update also allows you to delete the App Store, Messages, Camera, Photos, and Safari apps.

Apple also said developers can now develop and test EU-specific features around the world.

Following feedback from the European Commission and developers, these releases allow developers to make EU-specific features such as alternative browser engines, contactless apps, Marketplace installs from web browsers, and Marketplace apps available worldwide. Develop and test from anywhere. Developers of apps that use alternative browser engines can now use WebKit in those same apps.

Voice memo upgrade

For iPhone 16 Pro users, iOS 18.2 unlocks the upgraded Voice Memos experience that Apple introduced last month. This feature allows you to overlay multiple tracks on top of each other. You can also separate these layers after recording.

volume limit

The Settings app has a new “Volume Limit” control for your iPhone’s built-in speaker. This lets you set a volume limit at which your iPhone’s speakers can play audio, such as songs, movies, and other media. This option is located under “Sounds & Haptics” in the Settings app.

Apple says this restriction doesn’t affect phone or FaceTime calls, emergency calls and alerts, ringtones, alarms, system sounds, or Find Me sounds.
