Insulet (Nasdaq:PODD) today announced the full market release of Omnipod 5, its automated insulin dosing app for iPhone, in the United States.
Acton, Massachusetts-based Insulet is currently making the app available for free download from the Apple App Store. This gives users full control of the Omnipod 5 patch pump from a compatible iPhone. For example, users can boluse meals, change pumps, and adjust settings. Additionally, Omnipod 5 users with a compatible iPhone no longer need to carry around a separate controller device.
Omnipod 5 is the first FDA-cleared tubeless automated insulin delivery system that communicates with a CGM. Insulin administration actively corrects high levels and protects against low levels. This waterproof device features mobile app control for ease of use.
Insulet began limited release of its Omnipod 5 app for iPhone in June. The FDA approved this app just over a year ago.

Unique features of the Omnipod 5 app for iPhone include a custom food feature that allows users to enter, save, and list carbohydrate counts for common meal portions, favorite foods, and snacks. When using the SmartBolus Calculator, you can also choose from a personalized food list. This determines the amount of insulin needed for each meal, minimizes carbohydrate counting, and simplifies mealtime calculations.
Insulet says it designed and tested the app with users to improve the controller experience. It features an intuitive user interface that allows you to view real-time glucose information directly on your home screen.
The company’s app is now compatible with the Dexcom G6 continuous glucose monitor (CGM). Insulet expects next-generation G7 compatibility in 2025 in the US
“Diabetes is complex, but managing it doesn’t have to be,” said Eric Benjamin, Insulet vice president, chief product and customer experience officer. “The Omnipod 5 app for iPhone gives people with diabetes more choice and simplifies their daily lives. Using your own phone also makes managing your diabetes more convenient. It’s a great combination and I love it. That’s why we’re excited to bring this long-awaited innovation to our customers.” Benjamin noted that the iPhone app is the most requested feature by Omnipod 5 users.
