The sale, purchase, and use of the iPhone 16 is prohibited in Indonesia. Industry Minister Agus Gumiwan Kartasasmita announced that all of Apple’s latest iPhone models sold in the country are illegal and warned consumers not to buy the devices from abroad.

The iPhone 16 was launched globally on September 20, but Indonesia banned the iPhone 16 along with other latest Apple products, including the iPhone 16 Pro lineup and Apple Watch Series 10.

“If there is an iPhone 16 available for use in Indonesia, we can say that the device is illegal. Please report it to us,” Kartasasmita said.

The minister also said that the device had not been issued with an International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) certificate.

Why iPhone 16 is being used, sales are banned in Indonesia

Kartasasmita said that permits for the iPhone 16 have not yet been issued because there are still commitments that Apple has to fulfill.

According to reports, Apple is not fulfilling its investment commitments to Indonesia. The tech giant has pledged to invest Rp1.71 trillion in Indonesia, but so far it has only invested Rp1.48 trillion ($95 million), with a shortfall of Rp230 billion ($14.75 million). are.

Earlier this month, the Ministry of Industry announced that “Apple’s iPhone 16 cannot yet be sold in Indonesia as the extension of the TKDN certification is still pending and we are awaiting the realization of further investment from Apple.”

To obtain TKDN certification in Indonesia, companies must meet a 40% local content value requirement in order to sell their products in the country.

This certification process is directly related to Apple’s efforts to establish a research and development facility in Indonesia, known as Apple Academy.

Meanwhile, Febri Hendry Antoni Arif, a spokesperson for Indonesia’s Ministry of Industry, confirmed that the application for TKDN certification for the iPhone 16 is under review, but is conditional on Apple fulfilling its investment commitments.
