Huawei once again delivered a strong blow to Apple’s iPhone sales in the Chinese smartphone market in the third quarter of 2024. Both high-tech manufacturers continue to face fierce competition in China. More insights on this subject are shared in the report.
According to an IDC report, Huawei surpassed Apple in China’s smartphone sales ranking in the third quarter of 2024. The analysis also takes into account the rise of other tech giants, which are down in the Chinese consumer market in the third quarter of this year.
Apple and Huawei were named in the top five rankers list. The former won second place and the latter was ranked third. Despite the rise in rankings, Apple’s annual iPhone sales declined to 0.3%, reaching 15.6% of the market share in Q3 2023.
Huawei took third place with a market share of 15.3% in the third quarter of 2024. It was only 0.3% less than Apple, but increased by 4.3% compared to the previous year (same period).
In terms of progress, the company achieved an excellent performance in China’s mobile phone sales ranking for the third quarter of 2024, with a year-on-year increase of 42.0%. This is the highest number among the top five ranks. Huawei has now achieved double-digit sales for four consecutive quarters.
Huawei’s growth against Apple is a result of strong sales of the Mate 60 and Pura 70 series. Both flagship lineups have been shining like stars in the Chinese smartphone market since their launch. You can check the shipping details for Pura 70 here.
Meanwhile, Chinese authorities and companies have consistently banned the use of iPhones in the country. This measure affected iPhone sales in the market.
Apple announced the iPhone 16 model in September, but following Huawei’s trifold phone, the series’ luster has faded. It seems like Chinese OEMs continue to cause problems for iPhone manufacturers in every possible way.
As for the other rankers, Vivo took first place with a market share of 18.6% and year-on-year growth rate of 21.5%. Xiaomi ranks fourth with a market share of 14.8% and a year-on-year progress rate of 12.8%. Honor ranks last with a market share of 14.6%, but its annual growth rate is lagging at 22.5% year-on-year.
Together, these top companies increased smartphone shipments in China by 3.2% year-on-year (68.8 million units in the third quarter of this year). Arthur Guo, Senior Research Analyst at IDC China said:
“A wave of significant device upgrades is driving a sustained recovery in China’s smartphone market.Despite ongoing challenges, consumers continue to buy new smartphones after three years of pent-up demand. There is a growing desire to do so.”
