If you have an iPhone and want to record your phone conversations, there’s finally an official way. With the release of iOS 18.1, new call recording features have been added. Previously, iPhones couldn’t record calls without using third-party apps or tricks like putting the phone on speaker mode and using a second device to record. it’s over. Here we’ll show you how to start recording a call and start transcribing it using Apple’s built-in methods.

First and foremost, you’ll need to upgrade to iOS 18.1, the version that introduces call recording to your iPhone. You can start this upgrade from setting -> common -> Software update. Once the update is complete, you do not need to enable call recording separately. This feature will appear every time you receive a call. However, please note that call recording is sold as an Apple Intelligence feature. That means Apple is only publicly discussing what’s available on the iPhone 15 Pro and above. In any case, most of its features started working on iPhone XS and above with iOS 18.1 Beta 4 and above, so it’s worth keeping an eye on regardless of the model.

Next time someone calls you, make sure the call is in full screen mode. If your call appears as a small floating window at the top of your screen, just tap it to expand it to full screen. In full screen mode, you will see a call recording button in the top left corner.

When you tap this button, your iPhone first announces to everyone that the call is being recorded, then begins recording the call.

All call recordings are saved in a separate folder. To see them, in the top left corner of the Notes app, click[フォルダー]Tap the button and call recording button. All recorded calls are displayed here and you can select any to play the recording. Only phones with Apple Intelligence will see an AI-generated summary of your call, but you’ll also see a transcript of the call along with the recording.

Select any app from the share sheet and send it to others. You can also send recordings to your own device using this method. Calls are saved in m4a format, which saves space without sacrificing too much quality.

Check if recording a call is legal

Apple’s call recording feature automatically notifies all parties that a recording has begun, but it’s best to exercise caution while recording to ensure you’re complying with the law. Before you start recording, check whether all attendees must consent to recording in your area. Additionally, to avoid accusations of eavesdropping or illegal eavesdropping, always make sure you are present in the conversation before recording it.
