I need to confess my bias from the outset by providing context for my criticism. I love Apple TV+. If I had to choose just one streaming service to continue using, I would say 100% seriously. it is, sugar and slow horse. However, I found enough Apple Original movies on the movie side of the streamer to keep me entertained, like newly released movies. wolfsApple’s brazen attitude towards theatrical distribution seems to have caused Apple too much trouble to back down. That, in turn, fuels the narrative that the iPhone maker’s streamers are somehow in over their heads.
Along similar lines, Steve McQueen’s upcoming World War II film also has at least an outside chance. blitz “Apple,” starring Saoirse Ronan and set during the Nazi bombing raids on London, will once again stir up vitriol.
The film is essentially the story of a boy trying to get home to his mother (Ronan) during the London bombings, but it more or less follows the formula that Apple has been running for a while now – even if it’s successful. Only sporadically. we are honest Generally, the equation is: Add to the mix a big-name director, a huge production budget, gorgeous visuals, and (in most cases) some kind of high-concept story.
Written and directed by McQueen blitz (in theaters November 1st, November 22nd on Apple TV+) and reunites with production designer Adam Stockhausen (12 years of slavery), costume designer Jacqueline Durand (small ax), composer Hans Zimmer (12 years of slavery), Director of Photography Yorick Le Saux (Little Women) and makeup designer Naomi Dunn (no time to die). Initial reactions to the film, which have also just been leaked online, are disappointing to say the least.
World of Reel features some of the feedback received from cast and crew screenings over the weekend. And while you’d think the cast and crew would tend to be pretty positive about something they’ve worked so hard on, that’s not the case here. Sample: “Well, that was disappointing. Considering the current discourse, this isn’t a terrible movie or a disaster like Joker. But I have high expectations for a Steve McQueen movie. And it’s a convincingly moving movie. Despite the story, it didn’t stick with me, it just left an indelible mark…perhaps the first stain on Steve’s pristine filmography.”
And another: “It breaks my heart to type this review. I wanted to be Ronan and McQueen and love this movie. It’s so clunky. Dare I say it in general? This year It was one of the movies I had the highest expectations for, but unfortunately I was very disappointed. It looked great, but I wasn’t really impressed with the rest of the movie.
Similarly, there are a lot of 2 and 3 star ratings. blitz with letterbox d. In other words, this doesn’t seem like a good start for Apple to make another big move in the feature film space. It pains me to say this, but Apple’s decision to backtrack on its theatrical ambitions may have been a wise one. But again, I would like to emphasize that this is not me criticizing the service as a whole. If anything, it feels like this is more of a growing pains situation, with Apple figuring out what works and what doesn’t and responding accordingly.
