Google has started gradually rolling out Android 15 to supported Pixel devices. Some users are reporting that they’ve already gotten the update, but the big rollout is expected to happen later this week.
The supported Pixel smartphones are:
Google Pixel 6 • Google Pixel 6 Pro • Google Pixel 6a
Google Pixel 7 • Google Pixel 7 Pro • Google Pixel 7a
Google Pixel Fold • Google Pixel Tablet
Google Pixel 8 • Google Pixel 8 Pro • Google Pixel 8a
Google Pixel 9 • Google Pixel 9 Pro XL
Pixel 9 Pro and 9 Pro Fold are not included in the list, but of course they will also be updated. It launched with Android 14, even though it launched on September 9th instead of August 22nd like the 9 and 9 Pro XL.
Android 15 brings many improvements. A complete list can be found here. Highlights include a more efficient AV1 software decoder (dav1d), better PDF handling and better font rendering, as well as experimental support for ANGLE (Almost Native Graphics Layer Engine).
Users can free up space on their devices by archiving apps. You also have the option to create a private space where you can store sensitive apps under an additional layer of authentication. Additionally, new APIs allow apps to choose power efficiency over performance for a given workload.
There’s also richer widget previews, picture-in-picture improvements, improved Do Not Disturb rules, dedicated support for cover displays on foldable devices, satellite connectivity, NFC and wallet improvements, and big improvements to big screen multitasking.
