Has Samsung finally made a decision about the Galaxy S25’s processor?

Samsung Galaxy S25 Plus leaked renders (3)

TL;DR

  • Samsung reportedly plans to use Snapdragon chips only in its Galaxy S25 phones.
  • This follows the leaker’s claim that the Galaxy S25 will also use only Snapdragon silicon.

The Samsung Galaxy S25 series is expected to launch in January 2025, but there are conflicting rumors about the chipset selection. Currently, the website claims that the new Samsung phones will only be powered by Snapdragon silicon.

Korean is Hankyoung The outlet reports that the Galaxy S25 series will use only the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 processor. The website adds that Samsung’s head of mobile, TM Roh, will be in Hawaii to attend the Snapdragon Summit to negotiate improved prices for new chips.

This report comes days after a tipster claimed that the Galaxy S25 will use only Snapdragon silicon. In other words, there is a growing possibility that the Exynos 2500 chip will not be used in the Galaxy S25 series.

Is the Snapdragon-only Galaxy S25 a good thing?

Samsung reportedly experienced yield issues with its Exynos 2500 earlier this year. Yields for this chip are said to be just under 20% by the second quarter of 2024, with a 60% yield clearly required for mass production. At the time, Samsung was said to be “doing everything in its power” to improve yields in preparation for mass production at the end of the year. According to this latest report, it seems that this effort was not enough for the Galaxy S25 series.

Samsung switching the Galaxy S25 series to only Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will be a double-edged sword. Qualcomm’s previous chips have largely enjoyed better performance than Exynos silicon, and the new Snapdragon chips are expected to offer even bigger performance upgrades through the use of custom CPUs. However, Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will be more expensive than Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, so the Galaxy S25 series may be more expensive or feature downgrades.
