In 2022, Google introduced the taskbar in Android 12L (an operating system for tablets, foldables, and generally larger screens) to give tablet users quick access to their favorite apps.
There are currently 6 pinned apps and 2 recommended apps on the taskbar of your Android tablet. If you use Pixel Launcher, you may see recently used apps, but this is based on how often you use the app and not necessarily your recent activity.
This means that the app you see isn’t necessarily the one you used most recently. Luckily, though, Google seems to be planning an upgrade that will show recently used apps on the taskbar.
Mishaal Rahman and Android Authority recently discovered clues about this feature while investigating the code present in Android QPR Beta 2. The code suggests that Google is working on a new taskbar design that replaces the two proposed apps with two recent apps.
Other manufacturers, such as Samsung and OnePlus, already have this kind of functionality on devices like the OnePlus Open and Galaxy Z Fold 6, allowing users to see recently used apps on the taskbar.
It’s not clear when this change will happen or if Google will decide to include it as part of Android 15. While this feature is very useful for foldable devices and tablets, it may not be as useful for regular phones. Regular version of Android. For now, the feature is not officially available, and Rahman pointed out that it has not been enabled yet.
There is also no firm timeline for when this feature will be generally available. In addition to showing recent apps, Android 15 QPR1 Beta 2 may introduce other features such as quick keyword toggling and lock screen widgets. However, please note that all of these features are still in the testing phase at this time and may be changed (or abandoned) before the official release begins.
In my opinion, having the latest apps on a tablet is very useful, and I like how Apple implemented it on the iPad. So kudos to Google for working on this feature.
