According to reports, Google Play Store may be developing a new download manager that will track and display recently downloaded apps on Android devices. The feature was discovered during APK disassembly of certain app versions on the Google Play Store and is speculated to show Android users a list detailing their recently downloaded apps. It has been reported that when users exit the manager, apps that have been downloaded but not yet opened are highlighted.
Google Play Store Download Manager
According to a report by Android Authority, the Google Play Store download manager will automatically appear once the app installation begins. It was discovered after an APK teardown of Google Play Store version 42.9.16-31 and contains several strings that refer to the download manager. According to the report, when a user opens an app on the list, the app closes and a screen appears displaying apps that have been downloaded but not opened. Additionally, the number of downloaded apps and games will reportedly be displayed as a badge at the top of the app’s details page.
The Google Play Store Download Manager is manually enabled during APK teardown and is not generally available. Features discovered during the aforementioned process are typically for developer testing and ambiguity remains regarding public availability.
Other new features
In recent months, Google Play Store has rolled out several new features. This includes the ability to download up to three apps or app updates at the same time. Google also recently made a big change, stopping the generation of fat Android application packages (APKs) and favoring Android app bundles (AABs) instead.
This can make the process of sideloading apps a bit more cumbersome, as users will have to install the APK bundle installer beforehand.
