Google has introduced a program known as Longevity GRF (Google Requirements Freeze) that aims to extend the support period for Android device software, similar to the Samsung Galaxy S24 and Google Pixel 8.
With its Longevity GRF program, Google allows chipset makers like Qualcomm, including the Snapdragon 8 Elite, to support its platform with Android updates for up to seven years. This means that devices with supported chipsets may receive Android OS updates for up to 7 years after their initial release.
This program makes it easier for manufacturers to provide longer-term software updates without constantly changing vendor software with each new Android version. This decision aims to make long-term support for smartphones more common across the Android ecosystem, not just Google’s devices.
It’s not that simple and has some challenges and limitations as well. For example, some new proprietary features may not be available unless the manufacturer’s software itself is updated. Additionally, Google’s commitment to Linux kernel support may limit practical functionality towards the end of the seven-year period.
According to information, the GRF program currently allows reuse of vendor software across three Android version updates. Under existing GRF terms, if an OEM wants a fourth, fifth, or up to a seventh update beyond three updates, it must pay an extended support fee to the chipset vendor to update the required software. It doesn’t have to be. Alternatively, the chip’s software must be updated on its own to accommodate Google’s new requirements with each future update.

If the Longevity GRF program becomes widely adopted, it could establish a new standard for software support. With longer software support, Android devices are likely to have more robust hardware, making them easier to upgrade and maintain.
In case you’re wondering, the Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 9 series receive seven years of software support, including Android OS upgrades, security updates, and regular feature drops. Similarly, Samsung Galaxy S24 series and Fold6/Flip6 also support up to 7 years of software support.
