Google Gemini’s first UI redesign comes to Android

Important points

  • The Google Gemini app for Android has a cleaner, cleaner interface.
  • The carousel of suggested prompts is gone and the microphone and camera buttons are now combined.
  • The updated app is only rolling out to all Gemini users on Android, and there is no mention of updating the iOS app yet.

The Google Gemini app is less than a year old, but it’s already been completely revamped. The app home screen is now less cluttered, more streamlined, more intuitive to use, and better aligned with Google’s design philosophy. That’s wonderful in pixels.

Introducing Google Gemini with a completely new approach to multimodal AI

The first thing you’ll notice is that the suggestion carousel at the top of the screen has been removed (via 9to5Google). The “Chat and Gems” section is also gone. Both have been replaced with a full-screen blank slate containing a personal greeting. A discreet chat bubble icon lets you view your chat history.

Looks less cluttered and more intuitive

The bottom of the screen has also been updated. Gone are the long prompts, microphone and camera buttons. They’ve all been replaced with one line: “Type, talk, or share a photo with Gemini.” The microphone and camera buttons are now integrated and a Gemini Live waveform button has been added.

This design is a replica of the Gemini web app and has a simpler interface. The design choices here look great. Truth be told, very few people used the suggested prompts in the top carousel, so unnecessary elements were removed. Now that they’re gone, the redesign is easier on the eyes.

Much like a clean Google search page

Google may be focusing on making Gemini easier to use for those new to AI chatbots. Both OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Microsoft CoPilot can be intimidating to those looking at them for the first time. Gemini’s new look is more approachable.

In fact, this UI refresh now looks and feels more like the Google Search page. It’s clean, with lots of white space, and one large box for entering text. If you’re familiar with Google, you’ll quickly understand how to use Gemini. Previous updates focused on Gemini enhancements, so it’s nice to see Google working on the UI this time around.

This update is currently rolling out to both free and paid gemini Users on Android. Currently not available in iOS apps. It is also unclear when or if it will be available.
