Google accidentally announces Android 15 will be released today

Important points

  • Google has coincidentally confirmed that Android 15 is rolling out to Pixel smartphones today and will gradually expand to carriers around the world.
  • Android 15 is likely to be released alongside the October Pixel Feature Drop with new features.
  • Motorola may also begin public testing of Android 15 for its devices starting today.

Android 15 source code was published at AOSP in early September, but Google did not release an OTA update for Pixel smartphones and tablets. Reports have suggested the update could be released in October, with a mid-September leak pinning the more accurate date to October 15th. Now, through a slip-up, Google itself has confirmed that Android 15 will start rolling out to Pixel smartphones later today.

Google Pixel and iPhone placed diagonally on a textured surface.

Apple, it’s time to take notes.

A post about Android 15 being available today was published earlier on Google’s German Pixel community forum. Although it has since been deleted, multiple Redditors received emails about the post and shared screenshots of it. If anything, this is as good confirmation as we can get that Android 15 will be rolling out to all compatible Pixel smartphones and tablets later today.

The company’s post said the update will be gradually made available to carriers around the world over the next week. So if you have a carrier-locked Pixel, you may have to wait even longer. Based on Google’s track record, the official announcement and OTA will be announced around 10am PT, with factory images likely to be available for download around the same time.

The Android 15 update is scheduled to roll out at the same time as October’s Pixel Feature Drop, so Google is likely to introduce some new features and enhancements that weren’t included in the beta program. Pixel Watch is getting some new features today as part of Feature Drop.

Please note that if your Pixel is already running Android 15 QPR1 beta, the option to install a stable build is currently not available. This will require exiting the beta program and will wipe your phone’s internal storage.

Motorola may also launch Android 15 beta program today

Interestingly, Google may not be the only company currently rolling out Android 15 for its devices. Some Moto Edge 50 Fusion users in India have reported receiving a prompt on their device that an update is available. However, it looks like this will be in beta, with Motorola likely rolling it out later today only to a select group of users participating in the beta program.

Besides Motorola, Xiaomi, Vivo, Nothing, and others are likely to offer more specific release dates for their Android 15 updates later today or in the near future.
